Saponification Chart
Each Oil that you choose for your soapmaking requires a specific amount of sodium hydroxide to create the reaction called saponification that transforms it into soap.
Superfatting
If excess sodium hydroxide remains in your soap, your skin can be irritated and burned. Large excesses of oil will result in a soft, soggy soap that could turn rancid.
One exception to the rule of precision is a technique known as superfatting. An excess of up to 5-8 percent of the total oils and fats in your soap can be added, such as avocado, apricot or wheatgerm to your mixture at trace. These oils will not fully saponify and their therapeutic value will therefore remain relatively unaffected by the caustic solution.
If you are working in ounces, please see the first chart.
16 oz of Each Oil that you choose needs a specific amount of sodium hydroxide of the chart to saponify.
If you are working in grams, please see the second chart. 100 of Each Oil that you choose needs a specific amount of sodium hydroxide of the chart to saponify.
There are 0-0.5% 4.5-5.0% and 7.5-8.0% of excessed oil range in the chart.
If you'd like to add some fixed oils at trace, and also would like to add some fragrance oils and /or essential oils, please use the 4.5-5.0% of excessed oil range; consequently, your soaps will excess 5.5-7.0% of oils. If you do not want to add any oils at trace, please use the 7.5-8.0% of excessed oil range or between 4.5-5.0% and 7.5-8.0% of excessed oil range.
If you'd like to make glycerin soap, please use 0-0.5%. Glycerin soap needs to be fully saponify and no excessed oil is better result.
